Microsoft is hosting a Windows 10 event tonight, which is expected to be centred on mobile devices. From new flagships to upcoming technologies, a lot is likely to be announced at the event. We take a look at the 5 things to expect at tonight’s Microsoft event.

1. Lumia 550

The low-cost Windows 10 Mobile-running Lumia 550 smartphone may also make an appearance the event. The successor to Lumia 540, it is said to have a 4.7-inch HD screen and pack the quad-core 1GHz Snapdragon 210 processor with 1GB RAM under the hood. The low-end handset is also said to have a 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, 1,905mAh battery, and microSD card support up to 128GB.

2. Windows Hello

Microsoft may get rid of passwords on Windows 10-powered smartphones with the introduction of Windows Hello. The new identification standard was announced in March this year and employs biometrics like fingerprint, facial and iris recognition to authenticate the users. Lumia 950 and 950 XL, which have iris scanners, are likely to be the first smartphones to offer Windows Hello integration.

3. Microsoft Band 2

Microsoft is also likely to give an update to its fitness tracker at tonight’s event. The second-generation Microsoft Band is said to have received a design change, where the fitness band will wrap around the wrist better than its predecessor; it is also said to have an altimeter, which will track the number of stairs climbed by the user. It is also expected to be available in more markets, though there is no word on its availability in India yet.

4. Lumia 950, 950XL

With Apple, Samsung and Google done with their top phones for the year, it is Microsoft’s turn to unveil its flagship models. The long-rumoured Lumia 950 (5.2-inch screen) and Lumia 950XL (5.7-inch display) are expected to make their debut at tonight’s event, powered by Windows 10 Mobile.

Both smartphones are expected to feature QHD (1440x2560p) resolution, iris scanner, 32GB storage, and 20MP PureView cameras. As per earlier reports, Lumia 950 will be powered by Snapdragon 808 processor, while Lumia 950XL will run on Snapdragon 810 chipset. The bigger model of the two may also have stylus support, according to the rumour mill.

5. Surface Pro 4

Microsoft is also widely expected to unveil the Surface Pro 4 tablet to tap the enterprise market, what with Apple and Google throwing in the gauntlet with their respective iPad Pro and Pixel C.

While not much is known about Surface Pro 4, it is said to have a bezel-less 4K display and run on the sixth-generation Intel Skylake processors. Not many design changes compared to Surface Pro 3 are expected, the upcoming Surface model is said to have a feature where the screen size changes when users switch from tablet to laptop mode and vice versa.
