As per a legend, Brahma once had five heads, out of which each head looked in different direction and one looked upwards. However, in the beginning he used to have only one head. At that time there were no cosmos and Brahma used to be self-content and self-contained. The husband of the RathiDevi, manmatha at that time was praying for Lord Brahma by doing tapasya. Lord Brahma after getting satisfied from his tapas gave him 3 arrows which when used make him addicted to romance. He tested the effect by shooting one on Lord brahma himself.

Lord Brahma was alone during that time and started to feel lonely. So, he split himself and formed a female form referred to as Sathroopa. As soon as he saw her, he got attracted to her. She tried to avoid his gaze by moving in different direction, but Brahma grew one head in each direction. She also started going upwards, but he also developed a head that looked upwards. Lord shiva noticed this act and became furious and cut down his head that looked up and also cursed him that he wont be worshiped as much as others in tridev. This is how the story ends.
